Details
GREAT AYTON HIGH STREET NZ 5610 (north side) 12/58 The Royal Oak Hotel - II Hotel, dated 1721 on sundial over door, with alterations and early C19 exten- sion. Coursed squared stone, colourwashed. Roof of plain clay tiles with terracotta ridge and brick stacks. Main building 2 storeys and attic, 2 bays, wide proportions. Lower extension 2 storeys, 2 bays. Altered central prostyle porch shares entablature with wide canted bay at left. Smaller, similar bay window at right and another in the left extension; subsidiary door at left. First floor 16-pane sash windows in stone architraves. Sundial inscribed: 'Deus adest laborantibus'. Roof of main house raised to mansard form, probably in early C20, with 2 large dormers. End stacks, the left stone-coped, the right rebuilt.
