School. 1830 with added porch. Part of the estate village of Sir William
Amcotts Ingilby. Coursed squared gritstone, grey slate roof. A 2 x 4 bay
single-storey building set back from the street. In Gothick style. Central
entrance in projecting porch; tall flanking flat-headed chamfered windows of
two 4-centred arched lights with hoodmould; the windows having leaded lights
similar to those at Town Hall Cottages (qv). A central limestone plaque set
into an oval frame below the projecting eaves band has the inscription:
"This school was Built by / MARY INGILBY in ye year 1702 / and indowed with
part of the fortune of KATHERINE INGILBY / Being ye two youngest Daugh /
ters of Sr WILLIAM INGILBY / of Ripley in Ye County of York / Barronett /
Rebuilt AD 1830". Hipped roof. Right return: two 16-pane sashes in plain
surrounds, the lintels raised and a further 8-pane window inserted above.
Added bay to right not of special interest. The style of the windows is
taken from the church tower and is similar to the School House and Town Hall
Cottages (qv).
