8/l10 Gates and gate piers in west garden wall approximately 25 metres south of west pavilion

GV II

Gates and gate piers. Probably 1817-18 for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby but possibly reusing late C18 ironwork. Ashlar piers, wrought-iron gates and overthrow. Piers: approximately 5 metres high with plinth and cornice band; ball and cushion finials. Gates of 2 leaves; plain bars; short dog bars with arrow-head finials; scrolled lock rail. Overthrow: delicate C and S scrolls with central Ingilby star in a roundel. The gate piers are not at right angles to the wall line but are aligned towards the south-west, the line of the footpath approach from the castle. The C19 gardens are on the site of the earlier gardens and the gateway was probably reused. See North Yorkshire Historic Gardens Register - Ripley Castle, Grade II.
