Details
KIRBY HALL KIRBY HALL ESTATE SE 4461-4561 SE 4460-4560 9/34 Stable buildings 10/34 approximately twenty- five metres north-west 15/3/66 of Kirby Hall GV II Stable buildings, part now used as grain store. c.1755; partly altered later probably by John Carr. Orange-pink mottled brick in Flemish bond, on low plinth; sandstone impost band and eaves cornice; gauged brick arches. Slate roof, timber lantern and wrought iron weathervane. Main block flanked by former stable range at left and carriage sheds and workshops at right; range of loose boxes and other buildings closes yard at rear. Main block: 2-storey, open-pedimented centre bay flanked by 2-storey, 2-bay wings, articulated by full-height recessed blind arches with impost band. Full- height central carriage arch. Ground floor windows on each side are unequal 9-pane sashes with painted stone sills, paired in inner arches and single in end arches. Arcade tympana contain lunettes closed by fielded, panelled shutters, except at left end which has 9-pane window. Moulded eaves cornice. Hipped roof; central stone-banded octagonal cupola with open lantern and weathervane. Cupola has clockface in moulded surround to front, and 8-pane fixed windows or 9-pane blind lights, all with gauged brick flat arches, on other sides. Former stable range: 2-storey, 2-bay end wall of main block linked by single 1 1/2 -storey bay to 2-storey, 6-bay range at left; further 1-storey, 3-bay range at far left end. Link bay has round-headed cross window beneath gauged brick archivolt on imposts. Ranges on each side are arcaded as main block front, without windows: tympana of two arches in 6-bay range contain lunettes shuttered as on main block. Hipped roof. Far left range has square-headed recessed bays pierced by later openings. Yard interior. Former stable range has 6-panel door with overlight and 9-pane fixed window at left. 2-light, 8- or 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes on upper floor; other openings now blocked. Flat arches of gauged brick to all openings. Raised first floor band and brick dentilled eaves band. Rear range: two 6-panel doors with overlights between three 16-pane sash windows. Carriage shed range: six segmental carriage arches closed by double doors. Stable buildings survive from the original Kirby Hall buildings, by Lord Burlington and Roger Morris.
