House and gateway and attached wall. Probably 1758-63 with extension built c1894. By James Paine for William Middleton of Stockeld Park. Ashlar with Westmorland slate roofs. Arched gateway is flanked by a pair of 2-storey lodges, each with only one ground-floor room. 2-bay, single storey extension to left. Vermiculated rustication and long and short quoins to lodges and archway. Ground-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars, one blind recess to left. Band at first-floor level. Modillion cornice and parapet carried across archway. Lodges have pyramidal roofs and ball finials. Hipped roof and large central stack to left extension. Low wall to right with blind circular window with keystones. Wrought-iron gates: side panels with scroll motif, double gates with ramped top, scroll motifs and waved dog bars.
