Details
HARTOFT HARTOFT BECK NORTH YORKSHIRE RYEDALE 5340 SE 79 NE (east side) 5/33 Birch House Farmhouse and attached Stable II - Farmhouse and attached stable. 1671, dated on kneeler, for Tom Page. Rebuilt in 1804, incorporating remains of earlier house, for John Harland; later C19 alteration. Herringbone-tooled sandstone to front and left return, on earlier footings; coursed rubble stone to right return and rear; pantile roof. 3-cell, hearth-passage plan with outshut to high end. 2-storey, 2-window high end, with lower 2-storey, 2-window low end to left. Board door to low end, with 2-light, large-pane horizontal-sliding sash to left: 2-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sash above. Roughly herringbone- tooled lintels to these openings. Further to left is a stable door with a plank shuttered pitching window to left. Openings to high end are 6-pane sashes in plain raised surrounds with vertically-tooled sills. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. End stacks to high end, and centre stack to low end. Left return: kneeler to front of building incorporates an earlier datestone and records the C19 rebuilding. Inscription reads: P I H IR1671TP 1804 Rear: single-storey outshut with catslide roof to high end. Plank door to cross passage in low end. Interior: in the room to left of the door an early Cl9 stone fireplace with a corbelled mantel shelf survives, complete with crane and reckon. House for sale at time of resurvey. The sales particulars indicate that the interior is unmodernised.
