A 169 NORTH YORKSHIRE RYEDALE DISTRICT COUNCIL 5340 SE 88 NW KINGTHORPE (south-east side, off) 6/43 Kingthorpe House and iron railings attached to 10.11.53 steps on Garden Front - II House. Mid C18; extensively remodelled and extended to double depth in early C19; further later extension and alteration. Sandstone ashlar on tooled sandstone plinth to both fronts (rendered to first floor of entrance front); dressed sandstone to sides; timber eaves cornice; slate roof; rendered stacks. Double-depth central stairhall plan, with rear service wing. Entrance front: 2-storey, 3-window main range, flanked by 2-storey and attic, 3-window projecting gabled wings linked by C20 extension. Further single storey wings on either side. Central 6-panel door beneath divided overlight in open-pedimented doorcase corbelled out over pilaster jambs. Tripartite 16-pane sashes to left and right. Similar windows flank round-headed Gothick-glazed window in raised architrave to first floor. Tall 16-pane sashes with flat arches of voussoirs to ground floor of both wings. Similar square windows to first floor and off-centre lunettes in raised surrounds to the gables. Single story wing to left has a false 16- pane sash while window opening in similar wing to right is blocked. Stone sills to all windows. Dentilled eaves cornice to centre range continues along returns of flanking wings and forms a raised attic band across the gables. Garden front: 2-storey, 3-bay front. Central 6-panel door beneath patterned radial fanlight within open-pedimented Doric doorcase of detached columns with leaf frond capitals and paterae to the vestigial frieze. The door is approached by stone steps with ramped up iron railings on turned standards. Round-arched window above with reticulated Gothick glazing in raised surround with imposts and bracketed stone sill. Full-height bow windows to left and right with tripartite curved sashes and tooled stone sills. Plain entablature over ground floor windows and frieze with swags over first floor windows. Dentilled eaves cornice breaks over bow windows. Coped gables. Variably placed stacks. Interior. Hall:- cantilevered open string dogleg staircase with slender turned balusters and moulded wreathed handrail; cheekpieces decorated with foliage motif. There are fine early C19 fireplaces with moulded decoration probably by Thomas Wolstenholme of York, in the ground floor front room to right and both rooms to rear.
