Country house. c1790-95; some alteration to entrance front in C19 and 1939;
garden front rebuilt above ground floor after fire in 1963. Original house
built for Sir Mark and Lady Henrietta Masterman Sykes. Rebuilding by
Francis Johnson. Finely tooled sandstone on dressed sandstone plinth and
with ashlar dressings to garden front. Dressed sandstone with sandstone
ashlar dressings to entrance front and sides. Garden front: 2-storey and
attic, 3-bay pedimented centre block which breaks forward slightly; flanked
by single-storey, 2-bay wings, with recessed link bays, and gabled
pavilions. The central block approached by a shallow flight of stone steps,
contains the original round-arched door-case in a rusticated surround with
imposts enriched with paterae. The double glass doors beneath a patterned
fanlight within a containing arch and glazed screen are reconstructions. To
left and right are original 15-pane sashes, with 2 similar windows to each
flanking wing. 12-pane sashes with sill band to first floor of centre block
and radial glazed oculus to pediment. Continuous band interrupted by
ground-floor windows to centre block and flanking wings. Raised first-floor
band and dentilled pediment to centre block. Dentilled eaves cornice to
flanking wings. Original panelled doors with patterned glazing beneath
panelled parapets to link bays. The pavilions contain rebuilt Venetian
windows, flanked by rounded niches, with a continuous sill band. The gables
are pedimented. Entrance front: basement, 2-storey and attic centre block
of 5 bays and flanking wings of 2 bays; basement and single-storey link bays
and gabled pavilions set back. Central panelled door in eared architrave,
approached by double staircase, and 12- and 8-pane sashes to left and right
date from 1939. C19 Venetian oriel window with Gothick-glazed sash over
door flanked by 12-pane sashes in plain raised surrounds. Tripartite
lunette to pediment. Raised first-floor band and dentilled pediment. 2
original 12-pane sashes in plain raised surrounds to flanking wings, and
dentilled eaves cornice. Oval-panelled doors beneath tripartite keyed
lintels to link bays. The pavilions contain original 12-pane sashes in
plain raised surrounds. Pavilion to right has coped gable and moulded
kneelers. Stacks pierce the pitched roof of the centre block; central ridge
stacks to pitched roofs of pavilions. Interior: the interior of the house
was destroyed by the fire in 1963 and was rebuilt by Francis Johnson. John
