WHARRAM WHARRAM PERCY SE 86 SE 8/127 Church of Saint Martin 10.10.66 - II*
Church. Early C10 origins but fabric mainly C12 - C16 with many building phases and alterations. Limestone ashlar, Westmorland slate roof to chancel. West tower, 4-bay nave with south porch, 2-bay chancel. Western half of tower has collapsed. 2-light belfry windows to north and east. Embattled parapet with pinnacles. South porch contains C13 pointed door with roll-moulded arch carried on responds with stiff-leaf capitals. Blocked C12 round-arched south arcade now contains square-headed 2-light Perpendicular windows. To north: C13 pointed doorway in chamfered surround. Blocked pointed arcade now contains C14 2-light windows with quatrefoil tracery, probably re-set from original position in north wall of arcade. Chancel: square-headed priests' door to south. 2-light decorated window to east. Interior: blocked doorway in south-east corner of nave re-uses C12 zigzag and Saxon capitals. Total excavation of the church has revealed evidence of an original Saxon church on the site. Ruinous at time of resurvey. Pevsner N, Yorkshire, York and the North Riding, 1972.
