Country house and outbuildings to east, originally the kitchen court, now
estate offices and accommodation. Main pile, East Wing and East Court begun
1700, completed 1714, by Sir John Vanbrugh with Nicholas Hawksmoor, for
Charles, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. West wing 1753-1759 by Sir Thomas Robinson
for Henry, 4th Earl of Carlisle. Interior of West Wing c1800 by C H Tatham
for Frederick, 5th Earl of Carlisle. Alterations to interior of West Wing,
including refitting of the Chapel 1870-5 by R J Johnson for Admiral Edward
Howard, Lord Lanerton, with window designs by E Burne-Jones executed by
William Morris and frescoes by pupils of Kempe. Limestone ashlar and
rubble, lead and Westmorland slate roofs. Baroque, except for Palladian
