HENDERSKELFE THE STRAY SE 76 NW SE 7169 (both sides) Castle Howard 7/74 Walling to park south of 12/74 gatehouse (formerly listed as "Gate House Walling") 25.1.54 GV I Walling with interval towers running east-west for approximately one mile, immediately south of the Pyramid Gate (qv). c1723 by Sir John Vanbrugh for Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Limestone ashlar to central section, rubble to outer sections. Wall approximately 4 metres in height with plinth, buttresses and tapering upper courses. Square and circular interval towers of varying designs. Hussey C, English Gardens and Landscapes 1700- 1750, 1967. Lees-Milne J, English Country Houses: Baroque 1685-1715, 1970.
