13/1 Low Hall 13.12.51 GV II
Manor house, now house. C17; remodelled in C18; further alteration and extension in early C19; re-roofed c1975. Dressed sandstone on sandstone rubble plinth; sandstone ashlar dressings; roofs of stone flags and pantiles. Central-stairhall plan. 5-bay front, arranged 2:1:2. 2-storey, single-bay centre, flanked by 2-storey and attic projecting cross wings with quoins. Pedimented centre bay contains half-glazed double doors in triple- keyed Gibbs surround. 16-pane sash in triple-keyed raised surround above. Broken moulded eaves cornice and raking cornice to pediment. Rainwater heads and drainpipes with moulded clamps in angles with cross wings. Cross wings have 24-pane sashes to ground and first floors, and 6-pane sashes to attic, all in raised keyed surrounds. Coped gables with kneelers. Stacks to centre of cross wings, that to right extruded, with offsets. Right return front: ground-floor sash in quoined, keyed surround. Rear: Gothick- glazed staircase window in round-arched surround, with imposts. Two 6-panel doors beneath flat arches of chiselled voussoirs to rear centre of each cross wing. Interior: open-string, dog-leg staircase with moulded, wreathed handrail; stick balusters interspersed with C20 replacement wrought-iron balusters. Moulded cornice to ceiling and plaster moulded roundel to centre of ceiling. Gothick-glazed screen at foot of stairs. Ground-floor room to right: possibly reused C17 square panelling with carved panels over fireplace. Cross-beamed ceiling. Ground floor room to left: raised and fielded dado panelling. Cross beam with guilloche moulding and dentilled cornice. Ground-floor room to rear left: early C19 cusped Gothick fireplace in cast iron. Most doors throughout the house are of six raised and fielded panels in fluted architraves with paterae.
