TM1473 BROAD STREET 585-1/7/20 (West side) 20/10/71 Town Hall
II*
Town hall. 1857 by EB Lamb. Banded red and gault brick with flint detailing of diamond and half-diamond lozenges arranged randomly over entire wall surface. Slate and lead roofs. Irregular plan. 2 storeys. West face with 5 tall round-headed casements with glazing bars. Moulded brick and York stone parapet. Elevated hipped roof. North and south returns both with one similar casement and a pediment over parapet. East side with recessed entrance developing into a two-stage tower with clock faces to cardinal points and an open lantern on a domed lead roof. INTERIOR: assembly room at ground floor under roof of arched braces and king post trusses. Stone staircase leads to council chamber at first floor: raised rectangular roof light. The Town Hall is a very finely detailed eccentric design which brilliantly takes advantage of the irregular site and dominates the centre of Eye.
