GV II

Public House. Late C17, extended into rear wing early C18, altered early C19. Roughcast and plastered timber frame. Machine tiled and pantiled roofs. Lobby entrance plan, the original building one room deep running parallel to street. Late C17 front block of 2 storeys on high brick plinth course; 3-window range of early C19 2-light casements to first floor under late C19 hoods on label stops. Two C20 top-hung casements to ground floor, with similar hoods on label stops. Double-leaf C20 door between windows right of centre, reached by flight of rebuilt steps with timber balustrade. C20 gabled porch. Facade with C20 applied false timber studwork. Gabled roof with C20 machine tiles. Ridge stack over door. One- and 2-storey gabled rear wings. INTERIOR: close-studded timber frame with jowled principal posts and cambered tie beams. Roof replaced late C20. Chamfered bridging beams. Rear wing with central open fireplace partly rebuilt under a depressed 4-centred arch but retaining early C18 brick canopy. (Paine C: The History of Eye: Diss: 1993-: 43).
