Details

HAWES MARKET PLACE SD 88 NE (north side) 20/127 Cockett's (formerly 16.1.52 listed as Cockett's Temperance Hotel) - II House. Dated 1668, with C19 alterations. For Thomas Fawcett, a Quaker. Coursed rubble, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 4 first-floor windows. Quoins to right. Ground floor: sash window with chamfered jambs; C20 6-panel door in slab surround; paired sash windows; board door in quoined ashlar surround with moulded arris and 4-centred arched head and inscribed on lintel "ANO A DOM 1668 GOD BEING WITH US WHO CANBE AGAINST T F". First floor: sash window. with chamfered jambs; C20 sash; paired sashes; small sash. Stacks at ends and centre. James Alderson, Under Wetherfell (1980), p 76.
