FORCETT AND CARKIN BRICKKILN LANE 5339 (north-west side) NZ 10 NE 6/38 Kiln Building with attached cart-shed at Tile Sheds Farm
- II
Tile shed, now sheep house and cart-shed. Probably early C19. Coursed sandstone, tile shed building roofless at time of resurvey, cart-shed has C20 clay pantile roof. Tile shed: 2 storeys, 1 x 4 bays; cart-shed at right angles to rear left, 1 storey, 3 bays. Tile shed: west side: 4 bays. Rough quoins. On lower level, 4 round-arched openings, each giving onto a rubble barrel vault, the second-from-left of which has a smaller round-arched opening in its rear wall leading to a short cross passage; above are 4 blocked openings, the outer ones apparently pitching doors, the central ones small round-arched openings as would normally be found at ground level in a brick-kiln; immediately above these are 4 holes, possibly beam-sockets, either for a lean-to roof over the present concrete yard outside the main arches or perhaps for an external platform for drying; above these are slit vents. Right return, at upper level, part-blocked large round-arched opening with ashlar voussoirs with herringbone tooling and draughted margins, recessed within corner pilaster buttresses, with impost band. Cart-shed, south side: 3 segmental-arched openings. Clay was extracted from lower land to the west, and the building is set into the hillside. VCH i, p 65: "At Forcett there are an old clay-pit and brick-kilns".
