Smithy to south-east of Engine House at Cononley Lead Mine

Smithy, c 1842, probably by Stephen Eddy, for the Duke of Devonshire. Coursed rubble
stone, roofless. Single bay, square in plan, originally 2 storeys, now one. North
side has doorcase to right with a plain stone lintel, stonework above missing, and
bricked-up square opening to left. Similar opening to west wall. Interior has blocked
fire place to east wall with rubble relieving arch above. Building derelict and disused.
Originally 2 smiths from Cornwall were employed here to repair pitwork, sharpen
machinery and drill steels. Part of a group of lead mine buildings at Cononley erected
by the Duke of Devonshire's agents between 1842 and 1847. Included for group value only.
