SD 95 SE STIRTON WITH THORLBY
7/9 Boundary stone (at NGR SD 9553 5235) -
- II
Boundary stone, formerly dividing lands of Thomas, Earl of Thanet and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall (qv), now dividing Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton parishes. 1698, millstone grit rubble, c.30 cm high. Number 29 in original series of 41. Inscribed T (Thanet) on north side and and ST (Stephen Tempest) on south side. Removed in May 1702 and reset 'Eleven yards' within Thanet's ground being 'worn down by the river, the better to preserve (it) from the water'.
