SE 05 SW EMBSAY WITH EASTBY KIRK LANE (west side)
8/21 Embsay Kirk 10.9.54 GV II
House. c1780 with C19 alterations. Sandstone ashlar, stone slate roof. Central staircase plan. Garden front: 3 storeys, 5 bays, with canted central bay. Doric engaged columns to portico of central entrance, open pediment with guttae to soffit, French windows, round-headed fanlight. 6 ground floor and 7 first and second floor windows have moulded surrounds and projecting sills; sashes. Central first floor window has apron and dripstone. Shaped modillions to eaves cornice. Left-hand gable end and ridge stack to left and right of centre of hipped roof. To left is c1870 former billiard room, single storey, 1 bay. Interior: rearranged central staircase and right-hand service stair, both c1830, stone steps, open string, stick balusters. The house stands on the site of the former Augustinian Priory of Saint Cuthbert.
