SWIMBRIDGE
SWIMBRIDGE NEWLAND
Ratcliffes, including barn attached
II
Farmhouse, now private dwelling with barn attached. C16 fabric survives to barn,
house possibly C16 but much altered in C20. Rendered stone and cob. Barn has
corrugated iron roof with gable end, house has asbestos slate roof. House faces
away from road with lateral rear stack with brick shaft and projecting stair turret
to rear. Barn attached at left end, lofted over at lower end. House 2 storeys.
3-window range of gabled half dormers. C20 fenestration. 3 buttresses. Interior
of house entirely altered. Barn has garage door with largely paned window to left.
Large double plank doors at left end with loft door above. C17 chamfered surround
to former 2-light mullion window to rear (roadside) with mullion removed. Plank
door to its left, and loft door over 2-light window to right. The lofted end of
the barn is divided from the main section by cob wall rising to apex of roof. Over
the single storey section are 2 raised cruck trusses, the feet of the blades
resting on short timber wall plates, one truss with side-pegged collar. Truss
nearest to house with collar tenoned into soffit mortices to the blades. Both have
trenches for purlins. Surprisingly both trusses are heavily smoke-blackened on
faces sited away from the house end, and the blades are sunk so low into the cob
walls that it is unlikely that they have been reset.
