Higher Cruft Farmhouse
(Formerly listed as Higher Croft Farmhouse)
II
Farmhouse. C17 probably with earlier origins, with C18 addition and C20 alterations. Stone rubble and cob walls, mostly rendered. Gable ended slate and corrugated asbestos roof. Three chimney stacks; stone rubble with slate dripcourses and brick shaft at left gable end, rear lateral stack of stone rubble and dressed granite and brick shaft on stone rubble base at gable end of rear wing.
Plan: Longhouse-derivative plan of shippon at lower end with through-passage, hall and inner room above it to the left. It is unclear if there was access from the passage to the shippon but only a thin wall divides them. Hall heated by rear lateral stack and inner room by gable end stack. In circa early C18 a kitchen wing was added behind the hall/inner room. A C19 outshut was added adjoining it at the higher end. In the C20 the internal room arrangement was altered slightly and the rear passage door blocked.
Two storeys. Asymmetrical four window front, set down a slope with the shippon at the lower right end. The central part of the house projects. Apart from the two right-hand first floor windows which are two-light C19 small-paned casements the windows are one, two, and three-light C20 casements without glazing bars. To the right of centre is C20 part-glazed door. Shippon has door towards lower end, first floor loading hatch and a ground floor window to the left. At the rear the kitchen wing projects towards the right-hand end with an outshut built against either side of it. Leanto against left end of shippon.
Interior: According to owner roof timbers consist of rough straight principal rafters with lapped and pegged collars which are likely to be C18 or C19. The hall fireplace is blocked but may retain its original open hearth. It has a chamfered cross beam with straight-cut stops. The inner room has a fireplace with an ovolo-moulded wooden lintel which has ogee stops. Ceiling beam with narrow chamfer. Visible externally on the rear wall of the inner room (now contained by C19 outshut) is a blocked wooden mullion window of at least three lights. The kitchen fireplace has a roughly chamfered wooden lintel. The shippon retains its rough heavy cross beams which are probably original.
