(South West Side)
No. 1 (Sycamore House)
II
House, c.1710 and C19. Narrow pink brick with dressings of finely
gauged red brick to front wall with gault and red brick to side
and rear walls. There is some timber framing in the rear wall.
The C19 parts are of gault brick. Tiled, hipped roof with fine
scroll modillion eaves cornice of wood. Two symmetrical
internal stacks originally with entablature, and a similar
larger stack at junction of front and rear ranges. Plan of main
range to road with rear service wing (mostly rebuilt), forming
an L-plan. Two storeys and attics. Symmetrical elevation of
seven window bays, including three slightly projecting centre
bays. Rusticated quoins and band of chequerboard pattern
brickwork. Similar finely gauged red brickwork to original flat
arches and window surrounds. At first floor one C18 hung sash
remains, the rest are C20 hung sashes of twelve panes each.
They were inserted when the windows were unblocked. Central
doorway with C20 doorcase. Rear range, C18 in origin, but
rebuilt in C19 and roof raised C20. Interior: Plan of hall
with original hearth and staircase turret with original
open-well closed-string five flight staircase. Balusters of
slender twisted barley sugar type and moulded rail. A little
early C18 raised and fielded panelling remains about here.
Abutting inglenook hearths between the kitchen wing and right
hand front room. The one in the kitchen has been rebuilt. The
ground floor, right hand room had stencilled floral pattern
decoration of early C19, a fragment of which has been preserved
in the attic. Roof of tenoned purlins in line, but staggered to
hips.
