SX 86 NE ABBOTSKERSWELL MAIN STREET Abbotskerswell 3/13 Prospect Cottage - II House, originally farmhouse. C17 possibly with earlier origins, considerably altered internally in C20. Rendered rubble cob walls, - hipped thatched roof. 2 projecting rendered rubble lateral stacks at the rear. Originally 3 room and through-passage plan which has been considerably altered and the position of the passage is now unclear. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, 4 windows on ground floor. First floor windows are all c. early-mid C20 casements with glazing bars, 3 light to left and left of centre, 2 light to right. Window on ground floor to right is 4 light C18 with wood mullion (square section) and glazing bars. To right of centre is probably C17 3 light wood mullion window, chamfered on the outside, with glazing bar to central light. To either side of this window is C20 part-glazed door under thatched porch hood supported on wooden posts at the front. Beyond the left hand door is a wooden 3 light late C18/early C19 casements . To its left is 3 light C19 casement with glazing bars. Interior: The fireplace in the right-hand, probably lower room, has a chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops. The fireplace in the hall has a chamfered wooden lintel with either worn or run-out stops. There is no access to the roof space but on the first floor the feet of straight principals are visible with a pegged collar suggesting an C18/C19 date. Despite internal alterations, this house preserves a relatively traditional facade incorporating some old window frames.
