6/120 Quince House including garden wall to the north east 20.2.67

GV II

House. A circa late C18 remodelling of an earlier - possibly C17-house, C18 rear left (south-west) wing and a C19 rear right (north-west) wing. Colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings; bitumen-painted slate roof, gabled at ends; end stacks and axial stack to main block, all with C20 brick shafts, lateral stack to north-west wing. Plan: Overall U plan: east facing main range, 3 rooms wide with a left of centre entrance into a passage with a stair at the rear; rear right and left wings at right angles to the main range, the rear right wing a kitchen, the rear left wing an unheated service wing. A rear centre lean-to provides a passageway between the wings, each wing has a service stair. The asymmetry and thick walls of the main range suggest a pre 1700 date but any features of this period have disappeared in the course of subsequent alterations. The rear left wing is probably C18, the rear right wing probably an early C19 kitchen wing, presumably removing the kitchen from one of the rooms in the main range at that date. In the circa late C18 the house was refurbished and retains a nice set of windows and a stair from that period, all in the main range. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a cornice with a modillion frieze. C18 doorcase to left of centre with pilasters, an entablature, panelled reveals and an C18 6-panel door with fielded panels. Good set of probably late C18 sashes with old glass, 16-pane except the one over the front door which is 12-pane. The right (north) return of the house has a late C18 small-pane window with one opening pane, a similar window on the rear (west) elevation of the main range lights the stair. The rear elevation is also attractive - apart from the stair window there is a small first floor arched window. A gabled porch in the corner between the main range and the kitchen wing gives access to the lean-to passage. The rear wings have late C19 or C20 timber casement windows. An unusually tall rendered cob wall with slate capping adjoins the house at the north-east corner forming the boundary of the garden. Interior: The finest feature is a very pretty probably late C18 stick baluster stair with a ramped wreathed handrail, decorated string and round-headed niche on the stair well wall. Chimney-pieces seen at time of survey (1987) were C20 replacements. A very roughly-chamfered crossbeam with runout stops and a 6-panel first floor door in the south-west wing suggest an C18 date. Roof Not inspected. A gentry house with a good C18 front elevation and a plan form unaltered since the C19.
