Details

EAST KNOYLE MILTON ST 83 SE (north side) 8/35 Milton House with front walls and railings 6.1.66 GV II Detached house. Early C18. Dressed limestone, tiled roof with coped verges, gable end brick stacks. L-plan with additional rear wing to east side. Two-storey and attic, 5-window. Central 6- panelled door with transom light and flat wooden hood on cast iron brackets, two leaded wooden cross windows with relief carved keystones, either side. First floor has five leaded wooden cross windows with carved keystones, centre window segmental-headed; all leading renewed C20. Two early C20 hipped dormers with steel casements to attic. Right return has single-light leaded casement. Left return has leaded casements. Rear has outshut with hipped dormer to centre, early C18 wing to right and early C20 wing to left with casements. Interior has good central stairs with two turned balusters per open string tread, wide moulded handrail, original wooden dog gate at foot. Dining room to right of entrance has painted recessed moulded full panelling and cupboards with shaped shelves and double arched heads flanking eared fireplace, ceiling with moulded plaster cornice and ribbed plaster panels with scrolled and floral motifs. Drawing room to left has similar eared fireplace, possibly not original. Study in rear wing has chamfered beam and chamfered stone fireplace. Some original doors with 2 fielded panels to first floor, attic has 4-bay roof. Dressed limestone wall attached to front right has saddleback coping swept up over doorway and end- pier with ball finial, low brick dwarf walls with cast iron spearhead railings and single gate in front.
