ARKENGARTHDALE SCARHOUSE LANE NZ oo sw (east side) 10/7 West House and Cottage
GV II Farmhouse and cottage under 1 roof. C18 and early C19, perhaps 2 builds. Roughly dressed coursed sandstone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 3-bay house, and 2-bay cottage to right, 2 rooms in depth. House: central doorway with part-glazed door in plain ashlar surround, sundial above in blocked window opening with plain ashlar surround, 16-pane sashes with glazing bars. Ground floor windows to bays 1 and 3 have plain ashlar surrounds, first floor windows have ashlar lintels and sills. Cottage: 2 first floor windows, 1 central ground floor window, all as house first floor windows. Shaped kneelers, ashlar copings, 2 end and 2 ridge stacks. Cottage has gable entry. Occupied first half C19 by Joseph Alderson, agent to the lords of the manor of Arkengarthdale (tombstone in St Mary's churchyard).
