6/92 Mount Sorrel Cottage

GV II

Detached cottage. C15, altered late C16, C19 and C20. Painted rubble stone, half-hipped thatched roof with brick stacks. Gable end to road, 2 bays. Single-storey and attic, 1-window. C20 door in C20 extension to left, single-light and two 2-light casements, one in blocked doorway to right. Attic has one 2-light casement. Right return has 2-light and 3-light casement either side of curved projecting bread oven. Left return has C20 flat-roofed extension and two C20 dormers. Rear C20 kitchen extension. Interior retains central arch-braced open cruck truss with chamfered soffits, full crucks on stone pads, a second cruck truss to south gable end only partly visible. Inserted floor, probably C16, has deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops running parallel to roof trusses including south gable end. Inserted stack of similar date on north side of open truss, has open fireplace with cambered lintel on stone jambs. Probable that house originally extended to the north; two bays would otherwise have been surprisingly small for a structure with such a fine open roof truss.
