5/14 The Castle Inn 26.1.67 GV II
Inn C16 or earlier altered C18 and later with outshut at rear. Timber framed of 5 bays, roughcast and colourwashed.Old tile roof, large chimney to south of centre with cluster of 6 rectangular shafts. 2 storeys. West front has hipped section to right hand refronted C18, one large upper 4 pane sash, 3 coupled sashes on ground floor, and half glazed door to right hand, exposed timber frame at rear.Main part of west front has 5 bays of which the first, second and fourth upper windows from left hand are flat angular bays on cills, with glazing bars. The third and fifth upper windows are early C19 2-light casements. Ground floor has 4 bays 3-light sash windows with glazing bars and 6-panelled door in third bay from left hand under flat hood on wrought iron brackets. (The upper room of west front was formerly used for wakes and overlooks the old bowling green, still in use). Interior has much of the timber frame visible. VCH p.250.
