SJ 99 SW WERNETH OAKWOOD ROAD (south side) Romiley 1/215 Hydebank - Farmhouse
G.V. II
Farmhouse. C17 (1655 on barn) for Robert and Anne Hyde, with a later wing at left. Dressed roughly coursed stone, red sandstone quoins, brick stacks and slate roofs. Originally a 2-room 2-storey plan with attic and a wing at the rear which was demolished and re-built as a separate house in C19. 3 bays the first probably of C19 date. Bay 1 projects, is roofed separately, has 2 C20 bow windows and a Victorian sash and stack on the left gable. Bay 2 has a single-storey lean-to porch and bay 3 a massive chimney stack with red sandstone quoins, heavy weatherings and a brick shaft. Moulded stone kneeler. Right gable windows all replacements, left has 3 and 5-light chamfered mullion windows. Interior retains a 3-light chamfered mullion window with original leaded lights; inglenook fireplace with chamfered stone surround and enormous lintel; chamfered beams with stepped stops on the ground floor and run-out on the first. Truss with diagonal struts in attic. Timber-framed partition runs the full height of the house.
