GAYHURST,
NEWPORT ROAD,
The Subway
II*
Bridge under main road, built before 1793 as part of "Sir Everard
Digby's Walk" designed by Humphry Repton for George Wright. West
front of "gothick" style, ashlar stone, 3 bays, outer plain pilasters,
the central bay flanked by buttresses with niches and crocketted
finials. In the outer bays a moulded string lines with the heads of
the niches and below are four centred arched recesses under hoodmoulds
with carved head stops, (the left hand arch now largely removed). In
the centre is a moulded archway with similar hoodmould leading to
passage, above it a coat of arms flanked by cornucopias. The passage
under the road is brick vaulted and bends slightly. The east arch is
plain and retains the original iron gate. A stream in a cobbled stone
channel disappears under the subway.
