Details
THORNABY MANDALE ROAD NZ 41 NE Former Town Hall 11/10000 II Former town hall, now vacant. 1890-92. Designed by James Garry of West Hartlepool in the free Renaissance style. Red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. 2 storey plus attics. 4 stacks. South front, 5 windows with moulded first floor band. Central round headed ashlar entrance with keystone and a pair of wrought iron gates, and inner glazed double doors in wooden pilaster surround with site lights and large fanlight. Ashlar surround has bell brackets supporting a balcony above. Eitherside are two, 2-light ashlar mullion windows with plain sashes and terracotta panels below, and banded pilaster strips between. Above 5 round headed windows with pilasters between and terracotta panels and coved ashlar capitals, moulded brick arches and carved ashlar keystones linked by a moulded band. Each window has a 3-light casement with stained glass fanlights above. Above a dentilated cornice and brick parapet. Chamfered south-west corner front, has a single 2-light ashlar mullion window with plain sashes and below a granite foundation stone. Above a canted oriel window with 3 casements and a central segmental pediment with terracotta panels. Above a parapet, then a square clock tower with chamfered corners. The front face has a carved datestone. Then a circular clock to each face, and above a keystone and cornice topped with a segmental leaded cupola with ornate iron weather vane. The north-west, Railway Terrace front, has 2 bays to the right identical to the main front. Then beyond to the left 4 bays with a chamfered plinth, moulded first floor band, and moulded brick eaves. At the right a recessed round headed doorway with 6-panel door, plain fanlight and carved sprandels. To the left a single and then 2 pairs of recessed plain sashes, a further doorway converted to a window, then a single recessed plain sash beyond. Above 4 pairs of plain sashes with moulded brick aprons. Over the left centre bay a curved gable. INTERIOR. Entrance hall has Minton tile floor, and an arched opening to an ashlar circular staircase with iron balustrade and a circular glazed dome. On the first floor the former council chamber has an elaborate coved plaster ceiling and elaborate plaster frieze, with 3 x 5 round arches with pilasters and 3 wooden Baroque doorcases. Later extension along Mandale Road not of special architectural or historic interest.
