Details
SW 97 NE ST ENDELLION 4/2 Higher Trefreock and garden walls - to front GV II House and cottage, now one house and garden walls to front. Circa 1840s extended in circa 1870s. Ashlar stone with dressed stone segmental arches to openings and large dressed quoins. Slate roof with hipped ends and brick end stacks. Rear wing projecting on right with hipped roof and further 2-storey range on right, originally separate cottage with slate roof with gable end. Double depth plan with central stair hall with 2 reception rooms on left of hall, one room on right with passage to rear and service wing to rear in rear projecting wing which forms an overall 'L' shaped plan. Further extension set back on right with 1- room cottage now incorporated into main house. 2 storeys and basement. Symmetrical 3-window range with original C19 hornless 16- pane sashes. Ground floor with 2 sashes flanking C19 4-panel door with semi-circular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars and dressed stone round arch. 3 sashes above. 2-window range on right-hand side, comprising cottage, set back with entrance on right-hand side, 20-pane sash on ground floor and two 20-pane sashes above. Interior Main range with interior largely complete. Reception rooms on left-hand side with plaster cornices decorated with scroll patterns, balls and acanthus leaves and grapes, vine leaves and egg and dart motifs. Chimney-pieces replaced in 1970s. Room on right with C19 Delabole slate chimney-piece. Service rooms to rear with larder door intact. Original open-well stair with open-string, square balusters and ramped and wreathed rails. Stone rubble garden wall to front. Near site of the earlier manor house of Higher Trefreock of which there appears to be few remains. This building was illustrated in The History of Port Isaac and Port Quin Dr Frederick Trevan, 1833-34.
