Details

Clevedon 2. ST 47 SW WALTON CASTLE 2/10 Curtain wall and towers at Walton Castle. II GV Curtain wall with towers. 1615-20 for Lord Poulett, much reconstructed and modified in late C20. Rubble, asphalt flat roofs. Octagonal circuit, with eight circular towers connected by straight walls; entrance to north through Large elliptical opening with late C20 plank doors. Towers 1 and 8, flanking entrance, have single lights and are crenellated, towers 2-7 inclusive have 2-light openings; nos. 4,5, and 6 have crenellations. The joining straight curtain walls have been raised c 1m. between towers 3 and 4, 4 and 5, and 7 and 8. The south front, between towers 4 and 5, contains a large late C20 glazed 3-door opening giving access to underground swimming pool, and to the left of the opening a small structure in concrete block for air-conditioning unit; this to be clad in stone, but exposed at time of survey (May 1987). Between towers 7 and 8 there is a second internal wall, and the space is roofed. In the courtyard facing the keep (q.v.) is a series of 4 centred door openings to moulded surrounds that to tower 5 appears to be of the C17 and to towers 6 and 7 rebuilt using some original stones. Otherwise much of the work is of late C20 oak, based on the original ruins of the circuit and towers. Interiors of the towers transformed in C20 work. A swimming pool lies under the courtyard, south of the keep.
