16/420 Parish Church of St. Mary 13.7.1964 GV I
Parish church built of coursed limestone rubble with some use of Northants ironstone. The building consists of chancel, nave with N. & S. aisies, S. porch and W. tower with spire. Norman chancel heightened C15 and parapet added. Its windows are mainly C13, though E. window was restored C19. Angles of aisleless nave are visible. S. aisle was added late C12/early C13 with early stiff leaf capitals to arcade. Windows are Victorian in C14 style. S. porch is also a C19 addition. N. aisle was added later in C13 with nailhead ornament to the arcade. Windows are C14. Both aisles have C20 ironstone buttresses. Clerestorey windows are late C14. Two bottom stages of tower are C13, upper stage added C14 and crocketed spire is C15. Only the bases of the pinnacles survive. Inside, along the N wall of the chancel are four arches which appear to be blocked tomb recesses. The two inner ones have stops in the form of human heads. The outer ones have finial decoration. C13 piscina. Number of interesting monuments to the Orlebar family:- Mrs Diana Orlebar 1716. By John Hunt. Tablet with two crying putti. Open scrolly pediment. Richard Orlebar 1803. By Lewis of Cheltenham. A female figure kneeling by a sarcophagus. Richard Orlebar 1833. By Humphrey Hopper. Nave has C15 roof with grotesques and heads of kings and queens decorating corbels. Norman tub font with chevron decoration.
