Cardington Cemetery
- II
Monument to commemorate R101 airship disaster, victims of which are buried in
mass grave beneath. 1930-31, by Sir Albert Richardson. Takes the form of a
large stone tomb chest of fairly simple design, set on 3-tiered base. Fluted
piers set into corners. Side and End panels framed by simple mouldings. NW
end panel inscribed:
"Here lie the bodies of 48 officers and men who perished in the airship
R101 at Beauvais, France, Oct. 5 1930".
Side panels inscribed with names of those who died, including Lord Thomson,
Air Minister, and Sir Sefton Brancker, Air Vice Marshal, SE end panel has
carved RAF crest.
