WRESTLINGWORTH & CHURCH LANE TL 2547 COCKAYNE HATLEY (Wrestlingworth) 15/115 Church of St Peter 31.10.66 GV I Parish church. C12 origins, C13, C14 and C15. Rubble walls, mixture of cobbles and ironstone with some fragments of C12 masonry. Ashlar dressings, mostly of clunch. Slate roofs. Chancel, nave, N and S aisles, S porch, W tower. Chancel: C19 3-light pointed-arched E window. N elevation has blocked C12 round-arched light, blocked 4-centred arched doorway, and head of small pointed light, apparently reset. C14 pointed lowside window with transom to NW. S elevation has similar low side window to SW, 2-light square-headed window to E and C19 pointed-arched doorway between. C14 pointed chancel arch. Nave: C12 origins. 3-bay arcades on octagonal columns to both sides, S one earlier C13, N one later C13. S arcade W respond has plain leaf ornament. Early C15 clerestory has 3 windows to each side, all of 2 lights witn 4- centred arched heads. N aisle: late C13. E elevation has a 2-light window. N elevation has 2 windows, one of 3 lights, one of 2 lights. All are square- headed with reticulated tracery. Pointed-arched doorway. S aisle: earlier C13. Similar fenestration to N aisle. Pointed-arched S doorway retains C13 jambs and carved capitals, shafts removed. S porch: C19, of dressed limestone. 4-centred archway. Single lights to side elevations. W tower: C15. 3 stages, with octagonal stair turret to SW angle, and embattled parapets. 2-light pointed-arched windows to bell-stage and to ground stage of elevation. Interior: chancel roof retains only 2 original tie beams. Nave has C15 roof with moulded timbers. C15 font in S aisle, octagonal bowl and stem with carved quatrefoil panels. Nave floor has slab with indents for figure under crocketed canopy and for 5 shields. N aisle E window contains a few fragments of medieval glass. C19 pewing.
