CRANFIELD SP 94 NE 1/1 Boxhedge House - II
House, formerly Boxhedge Farmhouse, now separated from farm. C17 apparently reusing earlier timbers, reworked C18. Substantial timber framed structure with red brick infill. Clay tile roofs. L-plan, S wing of 2 storeys and attics, NE wing of one storey and attics, with lean-to block within angle. S. elevation : triple gabled, the roofs of shallow pitch and probably a later reworking, certainly the RH gable which is slightly lower and retains original steeper pitch to outer side. Ground floor has 3 2-light casements of varying proportions. First floor of LH part has 2 sashes and one single light, and attic of RH bay has one 3-light casement. 2 LH gables each have single light to apex. All windows have glazing bars. Doorway adjacent to RH bay. 6 panel door in simply moulded architrave, surmounted by flat cornice hood on cut brackets. This is in line with back-to-back hearth, forming a lobby entrance. Hearth is served by red brick multiple ridge stack with moulded cap. Variety of windows to other elevations, mostly casements with glazing bars. E elevation has 2 gabled dormers. Interior: main block ground floor room retains C18 panelling to upper part of walls, with dados formed by panelling imported from elsewhere. Also C18 corner shelves with elliptical arched head and reeded surround.
