Details
CHURCH ROAD 1. 5128 Tilehurst Church of St Michael SU 67 SE 16/290 22.3.57. II 2. Church of England. South aisle early C14. Brick tower of 1737 (red and grey brick English bond, with header bond corner piers). The rest by Street 1856 including stone spire with brick banding and with angle pinnacles, flying buttresses and large gablets. 3 bay hall church built of squared and knapped coursed flint on stone plinth with stone strings and dressings. Old tile roof. 2 bay chancel; short north transept breaking line of the aisles. Cusped south door surround. Tower has datestones DW 17 R.?O R.?C 37 1737 17?71 (another 1+L to be found on the opposite side of the road in No 4 Church Cottages) 1779 Interior plain but with a huge and lavish albaster monument to Sir Peter Vanlore, died 1627, with his wife and children shewn. South aisle east window said to be by William Morris 1869. Large brass to Gavin More (died 1479). In the churchyard, various C17 and C18 headstones, many double.
