II
House. Circa C15116; remodelled C17, altered C18119 and C20. Red brick in Flemish garden wall bond and Flemish bond; timber-frame of end trusses exposed, south end weatherboarded. Thatched roof with half-hipped ends. Brick axial stack. PLAN: 3-room plan with axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces heating the centre and NE end rooms. The NE end was probably originally open to the roof and heated from an open hearth fire, while the centre and SW end rooms were floored. The partition on the ground floor between the centre and SW end rooms has been removed, and the NE end has been floored. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and attic. Asymmetrical 4-window NW front with small C20 casements, attic windows under eyebrow eaves, and plank door to left with C20 porch with thatched canopy on posts. Similar rear [SE] elevation, but with doorway on right, also with thatched porch. INTERIOR: The partition between the centre and SW end room has been removed and the fireplace in the axial stack rebuilt; the first floor is supported on chamfered axial beams with hollow-step stops and unchamfered joists. The north end has a chamfered cross-beam and later partitions inserted. Collar and tie-beam roof trusses with clasped purlins and common-rafter couples without a ridgepiece. At the NE end there are smoke-blackened common-rafter couples, the NE end pair has a small collar at the apex for the hip gablet. There is evidence of smoke-blackening on the central truss to the SW of the stack.
