Southern summer house in Hill Garden
at Inverforth House)

GV II*

Summerhouse, aligned south-west of Inverforth House (qv),
forming the central feature of the Southern Pergola (qv).
c1906-10. By Thomas H Mawson as part of a garden scheme for
Lord Leverhulme at The Hill (now Inverforth House). This part
of the garden is now in separate ownership to the house; for
the house garden features see Inverforth House, North End Way
entries. Octagonal plan with paired concrete Doric columns
carrying wooden entablature and open superstructure. Brick
screen wall on west side. Approached on north and south sides
from Southern Pergola and on east side by steps from garden.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the terraces were constructed using spoil
from the Hampstead Tube excavation. Excellent views over
Hampstead Heath and back towards the house. The garden was
divided when the house became a hospital; this part of the
garden is open to the public.
