ROCHFORD DOGGETTS CHASE TQ 89 SE 6/197 Purpose built barn with horse engine approx. 60 metres south west of Doggetts Farmhouse and attached to barn q.v. 6/196 GV II* Purpose built barn with horse engine, drive shafts etc. Early/mid C19. Mainly gault brick with weatherboarded upper floor. Weatherboarded lucam to south gable. There are external steps to loft door below the lucam and a small paned segmental headed window to ground floor. Similar windows to east and west faces of ground floor and single and double vertically boarded doors to east face. The horse gear is to the north west and is a rare, possibly unique in Essex, type of wooden and cast iron structure. Two 18 ft. (5.4 m) horse poles turn a cast iron vertical shaft carrying drive upwards to main wooden spur wheel with iron teeth. Wedlake and Co developed machinery like this at an early date and by 1849 the firm were marketing apparatus for working a bean mill, bruiser, turnip cutter and chaff machine. There are 5 hoppers in the attic, which has a side purlin ridge board roof and V bracing above collars supported by Queen posts. Herringbone strutting to floors. A chaff cutter is on the first floor with chute to ground floor, a cake crusher and grind stone. The gear also pumped water and probably worked other machinery. John Booker "Essex and the Industrial Revolution" 1974; John Booker "Batsford Guide to the Industrial Archaeology of Essex" 1980. John Booker measured drawings, 1963, are lodged with Prittlewell Priory Museum and with the owners A.W. Squier Limited.
