5/75 Brignall Mill House (formerly listed as 20.9.74 Brignall Mill (including machinery) and Mill House)
II
Mill and miller's house. C18 or earlier, remodelled in early C19; restored and converted to a single dwelling in 1977. Rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and cut dressings; stone slate roof.
East elevation in two parts, left 2-storey, 3-bay mill: at right end boarded door, in heavy block surround, with 4-pane sash above; to left roughly-shaped end quoins of the older mill, another 4-pane sash and 3 small 4-pane casements. Left return shows boarded door, external stone stair to stable door, and 3 tiers of pigeon holes in triangular panel. To right slightly-lower 2-storey 2-bay miller's house: central boarded door, with plinth of massive roughly- cut blocks to left. 4-pane sash windows, those to left in stone surrounds, with sills lowered. Right end stack and heightened ridge stack.
Interior: Much of the mill machinery remains including the undershot wooden waterwheel, sluice mechanism, 3 stones, gearing mechanism and hoists.
In 1977 the walls of the Mill were rebuilt above 1st floor level, all features being replaced.
1977 extensions, outshut and small parallel wing at rear of miller's house, are not of special interest.
