Details

MIDDLETON IN TEESDALE GREAT EGGLES HOPE NY93SE and NY976302 8/98 Bouse hoppers 100 metres north of Great Eggleshope 26.6.87 Beck

GV II Bouse hoppers for Wire Gill Lead Mine. Probably late C18. Thin courses of dry stone rubble with oblique coping. 3 walls, c. 2 - 2.5 metres high, form hoppers on side of fell. The top is level with track at c. 400 metres above sea level, which follows contours from former Wire Gill Mine, the bottom at c. 395 metres above sea level abutting a horse-shoe-plan enclosure. This enclosure is formed by walls from ground level at front rising to c. 2.5 metres at the back. In the back are 2 small square openings at ground level, formed by wood jambs and lintels with iron hinge-pins. From this level there was easy access to the main track along the valley.

A rare survival of lead mining techniques.
