Details
NEWBIGGIN FLUSHIEMERE BECK NY 93 SW (East bank) 7/153 Flushiemere House and level entrance 26.6.87 c.5 metres to north II Lead and barytes mine lodging shop. Probably mid C19 for London Lead Company. Coursed rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; graduated stone-flagged roof with stone chimneys and square yellow pots. 2 storeys, 3 bays with pent left addition of one storey, one bay. Flat stone lintel over central boarded door. Similar lintels and projecting stone sills to flanking and first-floor square openings, some with 4 empty lights; that over door blocked. Roof has 3 ridge chimneys, with top strings, at ends and at right of second bay. Interior plastered, with central enclosed stair; cast iron kitchen range, in left ground-floor room, by Henry Down, Barnard Castle; chamfered stone lintel over fire in right room; partition walls in right bay form 2 small ground- floor rooms, one with stone shelf.
Mine drainage level entrance. Probably mid C19. Sandstone blocks form round-headed rough arch with voussoirs. Included for group value.
The London Lead Company was notable for providing lodging shops for its miners post 1818.
