Details
NZ 32 NW 346288 SEDGEFIELD A 177 (West side, off) 6/28 29/4/52 Gothick Gatehouse to Hardwick Park ( previously listed as Artificial Ruin) II*
Gothick Gatehouse. Circa 1764 by James Paine for John Burdon. Sandstone ashlar. Long, rectangular-plan gatehouse with circular tower attached to rear of left return. Built as a sham ruin in Gothick style and incorporating medieval masonry from Guisborough Priory. Chamfered plinth and stepped buttresses. Front has pointed arch under hoodmould leading into through passage with quadripartite rib vault (probably from Guisborough Priory). Fragments of first-floor band to right of entrance. Ruinous flanking walls. Circular tower, said to contain spiral staircase, has triple-chamfered plinth and Tudor-arched doorway; similar doorway and flat band above; upper stages of tower missing. Rear has similar pointed passage arch flanked by small semi-octagonal towers; circular window in fragment of wall to left. Ruinous at time of survey.
The Serpentine Bridge and Gothick Gatehouse formed part of a set of 7 landscape buildings designed by James Paine for Hardwick Park. The remaining buildings have either disappeared or are too fragmentary to merit listing.
