NZ 32 NW BRADBURY AND THE ISLE A689 (South side, off) 6/1 Sands Hall 9/1/68 II
Country house. Circa 1638 (worn sundial, on outbuilding to east, was dated 1640); rebuilt and wings added c.1826. Rendered and painted masonry and brick. C20 plain, concrete-tiled roof and rendered chimneys. Centre block with flanking wings (set back on entrance front and projecting slightly on garden front).
Entrance front has low plinth and raised-and-chamfered quoins. 3-storey, 5-bay main block has central, tetrastyle Ionic portico with replaced 6-panel door in architrave, 4-pane overlight and cornice. Windows have projecting sills: 12-pane sashes to ground and first floors; 6-pane sashes above. Roof has flat-coped gables, shaped kneelers, central ridge and 2 end chimneys. 2-storey, 2-bay wings have 12-pane sashes, roofs hipped over returns, and end chimneys. Right return has 5 closely-spaced windows to each floor; all blocked except for 2 on ground floor. Garden front, with similar fenestration to entrance front, lacks quoins and has central, partly-glazed Cl9 door and overlight in moulded wood surround.
Interior. Mainly early Cl9 fittings. Ground-floor room, to right of entrance hall, has mid C18 features: moulded dado, with wall panels and dentilled cornice above; 8-panel internal window shutters and a marble chimney-piece.
