6/99 The Cock Public House, Post Office store, and 20/02/67 adjoining house (Formerly listed as the Cock GV Inn. The Stones & The Barn House II
Public house, shop and house. C15, C17 and early C19. Timber frame plastered and weatherboarded with early C19 red brick front. All of 2 storeys with clay pegtile roofs. Large 'L' shaped block, of various builds, with later-extensions at rear. The eastern part projects slightly forward with dentilled brick cornice and storey height string band. This has 2 paired double hung sash windows with margin glazing bars under segmental heads, over a similar, but deeper window and segmental headed carriage arch with painted impost blocks and keystone. A large wrought iron inn-sign is largely supported off this block. To the west, the front elevation has 4 double hung sash windows with margin glazing bars, a C19 replacement window in old opening and one recessed blank opening of similar proportions at the east end. The ground floor has C20 shopfront with fascia and small panes, a blocked semi-circular headed door opening and a pair of similar double hung sash windows with door and flat hood on brackets between. The storey height string band rises slightly above a door with segmental rubbed brick arched head and fanlight. To the east are a further pair of similar double hung sash windows and another door with flat hood and brackets. 2 stacks on ridge line of this range. The return range to the north west has a house in its northern end and a moulded plaster eaves. The front has 3 double hung sash openings, but with C19 six pane casements, a blank recess and then a further similar window on south end. The ground floor has similar 5 bay arrangement but with central door to the house part and one window with original small panes. The brickwork at the corner is a C20 rebuilding and pegtile roof is hipped over this corner. A block at right angles, behind The Cock Public House has a white weatherboarded east flank. The carriage arch is a C15 timber framed structure and the neighbouring roof to the south has a crown post with moulded capital and base. Fragments of c.1600 wall painting survive on the first floor of this part. RCHM 19.
