17/9 and 18/9 Rey Cross II*

Base and fragment of cross shaft. Probably C10. Sandstone. Wrongly shown on both OS map sheets. Badly-worn, 1.0-metre tall fragment of rectangular-plan cross shaft on a worn square-plan base. Inscriptions on shaft no longer legible.

Rey or Rere Cross is believed to have been erected by King Edwin of Northumbria (died 946) to mark the boundary of his Kingdom and the Scottish Kingdom of Strathclyde. Eric Bloodaxe, the last Viking King, was killed at Rey Cross in 945 so marking the end of Viking rule in Northern England.

Scheduled Ancient Monument.
