3/7 TURNBERRY COTTAGE

GV II

House, circa 1500, extended and altered in C16 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched. Originally of 4 bays. Axial chimney stack inserted at N end of bay 3 (from the S) C16. Extended by 2 bays to N, with a second axial chimney stack at the junction, late C16. C20 external chimney and gabled porch at N gable end. Single storey with attics. Central door, 6 C20 casement windows, 3 gabled and tiled dormers with C20 casement windows. Half-hipped at S end. The original house was built as one storey only with an arch-braced side-purlin roof. A floor was inserted in all 4 bays in mid- C16, and an axial chimney stack in the late C16. The bays added to the N were also single storey at first, with a floor inserted in the C17. The 1952 List (serial No. 8/176) records an inscription of which Eland says: 'There can be no doubt that this I marks the work of Henry and Mary Judd, who acquired H M Stomps and 4 acres in 1709' (p. 155). The name 1710 Stomps is now applied to another cottage further S on the same side of the road, serial No. 3/9.
