Details
BRANCEPETH WOLSINGHAM ROAD NZ 23 NW (North side, off) 5/42 Quarry Hill and 10/5/67 adjoining outbuilding GV II* House and outbuilding. Early-mid C17 house, restored and extended in later C19. C19 outbuilding. Coursed sandstone rubble with squared dressings. Graduated stone-tiled roofs and C19 dressed stone chimney stacks. T-plan C17 house with 2 parallel C19 ranges on rear of stair wing. L-plan outbuilding on right face of rear wing. Entrance front 2 storeys and attics, 3 bays. 3-storey gabled central porch with moulded C19 doorway under hoodmould. Mainly C19 mullioned-and-transomed windows under hoodmoulds: tall paired cross windows on ground floor of outer bays with 3-light windows above. Porch has restored 4-light window on first floor and 2-light windows on returns under a string; original small 3-light mullioned window above. Gabled dormers, above outer bays, have similar original windows. Dormers and porch have coped gables with ball finials. Steeply-pitched roof has coped gables and shaped footstones with ball finials. Corniced left end stack. Large stepped external chimney on right return with identical stack. Three original 2-light windows under hoodmoulds on left return; several original 3-light windows on left rear and altered stair wing. Extruded cross-gabled C19 bay projection on right rear. 2-storey, 3-bay parallel rear wings with scattered sashes, steeply-pitched roofs and similar stacks. One-storey, 2-bay extensions on rear gables of both wings. One-storey L-plan outbuilding: 6-bay front range has 2 boarded doors, 3 sashes, C20 garage opening at right and a pitched roof with left end and ridge stacks. Similar short return section at right-angles on rear. Interior of C17 house altered in late C19 with Jacobean-style fittings. House retains a complete roof of heavy adzed upper crucks. Outbuildings included for group value. Late C20 conservatory on left face of rear wing is not of interest.
